Barisan Nasional (BN) will contest 25 of the 36 seats in the Negri Sembilan state election scheduled for August 1, 2026, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) will vie for the remaining 11 seats as part of an electoral understanding to prevent overlapping contests and split votes [1, 2, 3].

Nomination day took place on July 18, with BN candidates officially nominated ahead of the poll [1, 4, 5]. BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the arrangement is a tactical move aimed at allowing BN to regain control of the state, noting, "This understanding is important for us because previously BN only won 14 seats. Insya-Allah, with the tactical move we have taken, Negri Sembilan will once again be governed by BN. The blue wave has arrived in Negri Sembilan, insya-Allah" [4, 3].

PN component party Pas is confident of winning all five seats they contest. Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said, "We are confident of defending the three seats we already hold. Following the understanding reached with BN, we also believe we have a good chance of winning the other two seats, Klawang and Ampangan". He added that Pas will contest any seat Bersatu fields a candidate in and remains confident of victory in all five seats [6, 7]. Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang affirmed, "We will support each other on the campaign trail. They will campaign in our areas, and we will campaign in theirs" [5].

Bersatu, another PN party, is contesting 24 seats, including some where it faces opposition from PN allies Pas and Parti Wawasan Negara [8, 7]. Despite this, BN and PN leaders emphasized that cooperation aims to bring political stability to Negri Sembilan. Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said, "Most importantly, we have an understanding to ensure victory in all contested areas... the bedrock of that is stability" [9].

Pakatan Harapan (PH), the incumbent coalition, is campaigning on its performance and remains confident of retaining power [10]. BN deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is among BN candidates contesting, standing in the Rantau state seat [3].

BN plans to launch its election manifesto on July 24 at Linggi, officiated by Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi [1]. Early voting is set for July 28 ahead of polling day on August 1 [4]. BN leadership intends to decide on their candidate for menteri besar after the election results are known [1].
