Malaysia started implementing B15 biodiesel blending on June 1 in Peninsular Malaysia, requiring about 0.8 million tonnes of palm oil for domestic use [1, 2]. The country produces around 20 million tonnes of palm oil yearly and exports approximately 16 million tonnes, leaving a surplus of about 4 million tonnes for domestic consumption [1].
“B15 only requires about 0.8 million tonnes out of that amount, so it will not disrupt the country’s export volume,” said Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, highlighting the careful balance maintained between domestic use and exports [1]. Industry stakeholders agreed that the move from B10 to B15 was planned after assessing supply, infrastructure, and readiness [1, 2].
Dr Noraini described B15 as “the appropriate rate that can be carried out in the near term without requiring major changes to existing facilities,” stressing that no significant upgrade is needed to implement the new standard [1].
The biodiesel adjustment aims to strengthen Malaysia’s energy security and advance its national green agenda by increasing the blend of palm oil-based fuel used domestically [1, 2]. Despite higher domestic consumption, palm oil exports remain unaffected, sustaining Malaysia’s position as a major global exporter.
