Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in Melaka will announce its candidates for the upcoming state election earlier than before. This move aims to give new faces enough time to prepare ahead of the vote, said party representative Adam Adli Abdul Halim [1, 2, 3].
Adam Adli explained that difficulties in previous elections delayed candidate announcements. "We have a history, where several times previously and due to various factors, we had difficulty announcing the names of candidates early. So, this time, we have made sure that we can prepare early because we are trying to field many new faces," he said [1].
The process for selecting candidates involves multiple stages of screening at the branch and state levels. The final list will be submitted to the central party leadership before confirmation by the party president [1, 2, 3].
Melaka PKR aims to include more women and young candidates to balance voices among its slate. Before announcing candidates, the party’s priority is to ensure a solid election machinery that can support whichever candidates are chosen. "Before we name any candidate, the most important thing is for us to ensure we have a solid machinery, one that works for the party and ready to support any candidate we field in the upcoming election," Adam Adli said [2].
To strengthen this machinery, PKR has launched election efforts recently in several Melaka areas including Tangga Batu, Hang Tuah Jaya, Alor Gajah, Masjid Tanah, and Jasin [1, 2, 3]. On August 29, they held an event to launch the election machinery for the Hang Tuah Jaya branch in Taman Bukit Piatu [1, 2, 3].
Informal talks have taken place between Pakatan Harapan (PH), the coalition that includes PKR, and Barisan Nasional (BN) on possible cooperation for the Melaka state election. Formal negotiations have yet to begin. PH election director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has approached Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusof to arrange a suitable meeting time [1, 2, 3].
Adam Adli noted the importance of communication between parties, saying it can help promote healthier competition and avoid harsh political tactics [3]. Meanwhile, PH is continuing preparations independently and has not ruled out contesting alone if a deal with BN is not reached [2, 3].
The PKR’s early announcement and strong ground efforts appear aimed at boosting their readiness for the impending Melaka state election.
