The Dewan Rakyat held a special sitting on August 11, 2026, to debate the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) covering 2014 to 2020. The 211-page report was made public on July 29 after the government decided to disclose it [1, 2, 3].
Prime Minister was absent from the special sitting. During the debate, several Perikatan Nasional (PN) MPs, including Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, PN chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Samsuri Mokhtar staged a walkout and did not participate in the debate [1, 2, 3].
Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, senior political adviser to the Prime Minister, criticized the PN MPs for walking out. He said the absence of the Prime Minister should not be used as an excuse to skip the briefing and debate on issues concerning Muslims’ savings in Tabung Haji. “This is not a debate about the Prime Minister. This is about Muslims’ savings in Tabung Haji. The Prime Minister is not there, so does that mean MPs cannot listen and debate?” he said [2].
Zafrul urged MPs to use the opportunity to question, debate or criticize the government based on facts. “If something is wrong, stand up and question it. If you disagree, debate it. If the government is wrong, hit it with facts. It is fine to disagree. But do not make it look like you do not care,” he stressed [3].
He described the Tabung Haji issue as one of the biggest involving the Muslim and Malay economy in Malaysia’s history, affecting the savings of people across different segments of society [1, 2, 3].
