Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim filed a defamation suit against PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man at the High Court on August 10, 2026, at 8:06pm [1, 2].
The suit concerns allegedly false and defamatory statements made by Tuan Ibrahim during a political speech on or around June 14, 2026, at Felda Jenderak Utara, Kuala Krau, Pahang [1, 2, 3, 4]. Tuan Ibrahim’s statements accused Anwar of abusing his power to influence police investigations and interfering in the appointment of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan [1, 4]. Anwar denied the allegations, stating in the statement of claim that he has "never directed, influenced or caused the Royal Malaysia Police to investigate or take action against any individual merely because that individual criticised the plaintiff, the government or any member of its administration" [3, 4].
Video recordings of the speech were published on YouTube and Facebook accounts including @Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, @Malaysianometry YouTube channel, and PAS Pahang Facebook page. A clip uploaded on June 15, 2026, to the @Malaysianometry YouTube channel had over 20,000 views, 482 likes, and 65 comments as of the suit filing [1, 2, 3, 4]. The video lasts about 11 minutes [3, 4].
Before filing the suit, Anwar sent a letter of demand to Tuan Ibrahim on July 30, 2026, asking for withdrawal of the statements, an unconditional apology, an undertaking not to repeat the allegations, and payment of damages and legal costs [2].
Anwar seeks general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, an injunction to prevent further defamatory statements, removal of the statements from social media, interest, costs, and any other relief the court deems appropriate [1, 2, 4].
The defamation suit marks a significant escalation in the political dispute between the two leaders that began with the remarks in mid-June. The court will now consider the merits of Anwar's claim.
