A factory in Jalan Keluli, Pasir Gudang, reported a leak of 200 litres of Spent Inorganic Acid (SW206) on June 11, 2026. No injuries were reported. Deputy Fire Superintendent II Firdaus Ahmad said the chemical residue was transferred into a scrubber system for containment, and a Hazmat team was called in for further action [1].
On June 13, an ISO tank lorry carrying nearly 25 tonnes of hydrochloric acid overturned near Cherating Bridge, Pahang. The accident caused less than 1,000 litres of acid to spill into a nearby mangrove area. The driver, Muhammad Noor Azwan Abd Saman, 34, was injured and hospitalized [2, 3].
The Fire and Rescue Department sealed the tanker's air vent to prevent further spillage and used soda ash to neutralize the acid. They also deployed water curtains to reduce vapor spread while the Department of Environment and fire services monitored the site [4, 5, 2, 3].
Water quality tests after the spill found no hydrochloric acid contamination. The pH reading in the mangrove area was normal at 6, and the Cherating River registered a pH of 9.4, indicating no acid presence, according to the Pahang Department of Environment. They said water samples taken from the area confirmed these findings [4, 5].
Mohd Salahudin Isa, Pahang Fire and Rescue Assistant Operations Director, noted that the spill involved the tank’s upper hatch cover and was limited to under 1,000 litres [2]. The Pahang DOE confirmed the spill had been fully neutralized and no further leaks were detected [5].
Authorities continue environmental monitoring of both sites and have warned that enforcement action will be taken if pollution laws are violated [4, 5].
