The United States reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defence ties with Malaysia during a courtesy call from US Ambassador to ASEAN Kevin Kim to Malaysia's Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin on August 3, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4]. The meeting took place alongside the 37th Annual Military Law and Operations Conference (MILOPS), held in Kuala Lumpur from August 3 to 6, which brought together officials and military representatives from more than 30 countries to discuss regional security challenges and legal military cooperation [1, 2, 3, 4].
Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled emphasized the sincerity of the US pledge, stating, "The US will always pay attention to enhancing and further strengthening close ties between the two countries, including in the defence sector" [1]. The meeting focused on reinforcing existing relationships and did not cover specific policy discussions [1, 2, 3, 4].
During the same day, Mohamed Khaled also received courtesy calls from ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn and Singapore’s Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Joseph Leong [1, 2, 3, 4]. Malaysia and Singapore affirmed their joint commitment to bolstering bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation through ASEAN frameworks and the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) [1, 2, 3, 4].
Highlighting the role of regional mechanisms, Malaysia’s Defence Minister said, "The ASEAN security architecture is, and must remain, the conduit for any substantial Indo-Pacific discourse," and described ASEAN’s Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) as "the foundation upon which all meaningful engagement with ASEAN should be built," emphasizing principles of mutual respect, peaceful settlement, and non-interference [5]. He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to the Zone of Peace, Freedom, and Neutrality (ZOPFAN) concept as still relevant today [5].
In parallel, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn began a two-day official visit to Malaysia on August 4 ahead of the Third Malaysia-Cambodia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation meeting [6, 7]. Malaysia and Cambodia pledged to expand cooperation in the digital economy, artificial intelligence, halal industry, food security, human capital development, and combating cross-border crime [6, 7]. Both reaffirmed their responsibilities as ASEAN members to maintain peace, regional unity, and work toward the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 [6, 7].
The MILOPS conference will continue through August 6, providing further opportunities for regional defence dialogue and cooperation among participating nations [1, 2, 3, 4].
