West Coast Expressway (WCE) expects traffic volume to exceed 150,000 vehicles daily during the Hari Raya Aidiladha festive season and long weekend holiday period, coinciding with school holidays [1, 2].
To handle the surge, WCE will temporarily suspend all construction and maintenance work that requires lane closures during this peak period, except in emergencies [1, 2]. Tow trucks, Emergency Response Teams (ERT), and patrol personnel will be strategically deployed and reinforced to provide 24-hour assistance along the 233km interstate highway linking Banting in Selangor to Taiping (Changkat Jering) in Perak [1].
Motorists are urged to plan their journeys ahead and prioritize safety. Lyndon Alfred Felix, WCE highway managing director, said, “During this period of high traffic movement, we advise all users to plan their journeys ahead of time and prioritise safety at all times. With the support of digital facilities and operational preparedness, WCE remains committed to ensuring a safer and more efficient travel experience” [1]. Drivers are also advised to ensure vehicle roadworthiness, observe speed limits, and get sufficient rest to avoid risks such as microsleep [2].
WCE operates as an alternative route to ease congestion along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It features six Rest and Service (R&R) areas offering parking, surau, toilets, and food stalls at locations including northbound and southbound Sungai Nyior and northbound Bukit Kapar [2].
The WCE mobile application provides route navigation, real-time traffic updates, and facility locations such as EV charging stations, motorcycle shelters, and emergency telephones [1, 2]. Additionally, the Touch 'n Go PayDirect system is fully implemented at all toll plazas, allowing toll charges to be deducted directly from users’ e-wallet balances [1, 2].
WCE issued statements regarding these traffic projections and operational preparations on May 26, 2026, ahead of the Aidiladha holiday season [1]. The highway’s readiness aims to accommodate the expected daily vehicle volume exceeding 150,000 during this festive period.
