Two teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, drowned while swimming in a quarry pond at Kampung Gum-Gum, Sandakan on May 31, 2026. One victim was found by members of the public before rescue teams arrived; the other was located by firefighters with public assistance, according to Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung [1].
On the same day, 17-year-old Mohd Akhil Zamani Sanusi went missing while swimming with friends at Pantai Bagan Lalang, Tanjong Sepat, Sepang. His body was recovered about 300 metres from shore by the Water Rescue Team using diving methods at 6:50 p.m., Selangor senior fire officer II Mohamad Issmanto Md Pono said [2, 3].
Earlier on May 26, 61-year-old Ismail Ibrahim entered Tepadung cave in Lahad Datu to collect bird's nests but went missing. Search efforts continued into early June, including an expanded search deeper into the cave after finding a power bank, but no sign of him has been found so far [4].
On June 2, 41-year-old fisherman Samsul Azmi Ishury was swept away by strong currents while trying to swim across Sungai Pahang near Kampung Peragap, Temerloh. "Initial information from witnesses indicated that the victim had tried to swim across the river before being carried away by strong currents and feared drowned," Temerloh Fire and Rescue Station operations commander PBK II Muhammad Lutfi Burn Abdullah said [5].
The next day, on June 3, Samsul’s body was recovered approximately 2.2 kilometres from Kampung Loyang, Temerloh, following a search and rescue operation [6].
Search teams continue efforts for Ismail Ibrahim in the Tepadung cave system. No further updates on the missing cave explorer have been reported since early June [4].
