The Malaysian Transport Ministry has not announced any final decision on reducing road tax rates for diesel vehicles, officials confirmed today [1, 2, 3]. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the ministry must await the outcome of the National Economic Action Council (NEAC) meetings held every Tuesday before making any announcements. "The matter is still under discussion. We need to wait for the outcome of the council meeting and related deliberations, which are held every Tuesday. We cannot make any announcement at this stage. Any decision will be based on the outcome of the council meeting," he said [1].

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has indicated the government is considering the cut to ease the impact of rising fuel prices on diesel vehicle owners [1]. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook confirmed that the ministry is studying mechanisms to implement such a proposal and to assess the effects on government revenue [1, 2, 3].

In April 2026, Loke revealed the ministry's comprehensive study of road tax reduction options aimed at lessening the financial burden on diesel vehicle owners who do not benefit from diesel subsidies [2, 3].

Deputy Minister Hasbi reiterated the ministry cannot pre-empt the council's decision. "目前还在讨论阶段,我们必须等待每周二召开的会议。这类事项不能先行宣布,必须等待理事会作出决定," he added in Mandarin, meaning the matter remains under discussion and announcements must await the council decision [2].

The NEAC continues to meet weekly to evaluate economic measures including this proposal. No new dates for a decision have been announced.
