PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party will decide on Bersatu's status within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition at the central working committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2026 [1, 2]. PAS currently holds the PN chairmanship while Bersatu remains a member for the time being [1, 2].

PAS ended its political cooperation with Bersatu on Monday, June 8, 2026, creating uncertainty over the coalition's future [2]. Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the previous PN chairman, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, made rulings that bind the coalition, which PAS now seeks to overturn. “The previous PN chairman made that ruling to bind us, which is why we want to break free from that,” he said [1, 2].

Removal of any component party from PN requires a majority decision among the four component parties: PAS, Bersatu, Gerakan, and the Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP) [1, 2]. On June 11, several PN leaders met with Gerakan and MIPP representatives to discuss the coalition’s latest status [1, 2]. Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said, “Based on the PN constitution, the removal of any component party requires a majority decision by the member parties.”

The decision on Bersatu’s fate will depend significantly on whether Gerakan and MIPP side with PAS or Bersatu. "It is up to those two parties whether to support Bersatu or PAS, but based on the constitution, the chairman has powers, including determining election logos and other matters," Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang added [2].

The coalition currently comprises four component parties. PAS’s chairmanship gives it certain powers within PN, but a collective majority is needed for major moves [1, 2]. The June 17 meeting will be pivotal in defining the current membership and cohesion of Perikatan Nasional.
