Around noon on June 13, 2026, a protest named "Himpunan Gegar TikTok" took place outside TikTok Malaysia's headquarters at Sunway Velocity in Kuala Lumpur [1, 2, 3, 4].
The event was organised by businessman Albert Tei to demand an end to what he called restrictions on freedom of expression on the platform [1, 3, 4]. The protest drew social media personalities, content creators, and some politicians who accused TikTok Malaysia of unfairly blocking accounts critical of the government [3].
Police were notified in advance and worked closely with organisers to facilitate the gathering while maintaining public order. Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus stressed safety was their top priority and warned against violence or any law-breaking during the protest. He said, “If such a gathering is organised, we will ensure that the safety of all parties remains our priority. Should there be any violence or violations of the law, police will take the firmest possible action.” [1, 4]
On June 12, the day before the protest, Marsus publicly confirmed police had received notice and cautioned that “there will be no tolerance if violence, aggression or breaches of the law occur. Police will take the sternest possible action.” [1, 4]
Albert Tei warned that if TikTok continued the alleged censorship, further and larger protests would follow. He said, “I consider this a declaration of war against TikTok. If they continue blocking accounts, there will be Himpunan Gegar TikTok 2, Himpunan Gegar TikTok 3 and more gatherings in the future.” [3]
Content creator Na'im Brundage echoed Tei, adding that sustained restrictions by TikTok Malaysia and the government would prompt escalated efforts, saying, “If TikTok Malaysia and the government continue restricting online content and accounts that criticise them, we will organise more gatherings like this and increase the pressure.” [3]
The protest ended without reported incidents. Police remain on alert for any further planned rallies.
