ComfortDelGro revealed it is investing more than S$10 million to expand and modernize its private-hire vehicle fleet with new electric and hybrid vehicles supplied by BYD through distributor Vantage Automotive as of August 20, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4].
The new models joining the Zig ride-hailing platform include the hybrid BYD SEAL 6 DM-i and the fully electric BYD M6 [1, 2, 3, 4]. Drivers choosing these vehicles will benefit from preferential charging rates provided by ComfortDelGro's sister company CDG Energy and maintenance support via ComfortDelGro Engineering’s workshops [1, 2, 3, 4].
Michael Huang, head of Singapore point-to-point mobility at ComfortDelGro, said, "We have seen strong demand from our hirers for PHVs, and this investment reflects our commitment to meeting those needs. Investing in our PHV fleet gives hirers more options, and strengthens our ability to support mobility demand across Singapore" [3].
This investment forms part of Zig’s transition from a taxi-led operation to a hybrid fleet model that combines taxis and private-hire vehicles [1, 2, 3, 4]. Zig’s private-hire driver base grew 28% in 2025 to exceed 4,000 drivers on its platform [1, 2, 3, 4]. Meanwhile, the Zig fleet expanded from about 600 vehicles at the end of 2025 to approximately 700 by mid-2026 [4].
At the same time, ComfortDelGro’s taxi fleet in Singapore declined 5%, from around 8,000 vehicles in the first half of 2025 to 7,600 in the first half of 2026 [1, 2]. The company’s net profit fell 19.7% to S$85.1 million in the first half of 2026, mainly due to earnings pressure in the taxi and private-hire segment [1, 2, 3, 4]. Operating profit for that segment dropped over 40% year-on-year to S$35.5 million [3, 4].
ComfortDelGro CEO Cheng Siak Kian noted the company has been increasing its private car rental fleet in Singapore to offset slowing taxi rental demand [4]. Electric vehicles are gaining popularity locally, with competitors offering models like the BYD Atto 3 and Dongfeng Box [1, 2].
The new investment in BYD electric and hybrid vehicles signals ComfortDelGro’s continued push to grow and green its private-hire fleet under the Zig platform by increasing options and support for drivers.
ComfortDelGro’s rollout of the new BYD vehicles and expanded charging and maintenance benefits is expected in the coming months, continuing the fleet refresh that began in 2025 and extends through 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4].
