Singapore marked its 61st National Day on August 9, 2026, by returning the National Day Parade (NDP) to the National Stadium for the first time since 2016. The event drew between 42,000 and 45,000 spectators to witness the celebrations on home soil [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong attended the parade along with Cabinet ministers and Members of Parliament, emphasizing the event's national importance [3, 4]. For the first time in history, the Presidential Gun Salute and State Flag Flypast took place at Kallang Basin outside the stadium. The 21-gun salute featured 151 participants from the 23rd Battalion of the Singapore Artillery and the 35th Battalion of Singapore Combat Engineers [2, 3, 4].
The parade showcased 32 contingents comprising over 2,000 participants, including the largest civilian turnout in over a decade and a specially formed contingent of persons with disabilities. The show segment involved more than 2,600 performers, highlighting stories from Singaporeans with diverse backgrounds and abilities [3, 4, 5].
Unlike previous years, the parade did not include the traditional aerial display, Red Lions parachuting, or the military vehicles' mobile column. Instead, the audience saw a first-ever indoor drone display involving 300 drones, adding a modern technological element to the celebration [3, 5].
Crowd control and safety were priorities for the parade. Coordination among the armed forces, police, civil defence, and transport authorities ensured smooth operations, with more than 100 entry lanes opened to accommodate attendees and special access arranged for people with mobility needs. Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Leonard Lim noted, "Firstly, we’re looking at opening more lanes. We have more than 100 lanes to accommodate people." He added, "A lot of the work has to do with communication. My job is to make sure we all understand one another" [1].
The official parade and ceremony segment began around 6:00 PM under the theme "Go Beyond Self". Earlier in the day, security measures began at 5:00 AM with Command and Control Group 2 monitoring the National Stadium and surrounding areas [1, 2, 3, 4].
