A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off Occidental Mindoro province in the western Philippines on August 7 at 10:38 a.m. local time, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) [1, 2, 3].
The quake's epicenter was located about 21 kilometers southwest of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, at a depth of 10 kilometers, PHIVOLCS said [1, 2, 3]. It caused noticeable shaking in Manila, the capital city nearly 150 kilometers away, where employees at a state agency building were evacuated as a precaution during the tremors [1, 2, 3].
PHIVOLCS stated that no damage was expected from the earthquake, although aftershocks could occur following the mainshock [1, 2, 3]. No tsunami warning was issued after the event [3].
However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) later revised the earthquake’s magnitude downward to 5.0 and reported a deeper hypocenter at 35 kilometers, differing from PHIVOLCS’s initial data [3]. There was also some discrepancy on the epicenter location, with USGS data placing it approximately 39 kilometers from Galera Port in Oriental Mindoro, rather than near Mamburao [3].
August 7 marked the only reported seismic event in the region this week. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and advise residents to remain alert for any aftershocks.
