Australia's ruling Labor Party retook the lead in opinion polls with about one-third support, its highest rating of 2026, according to a Newspoll conducted between June 22 and June 25 among 1,235 voters with a margin of error of ±3% [1, 2, 3].

The right-wing One Nation party's support fell to 29%, dropping to second place after months of rapid gains, including its best result in the March South Australia state election and winning its first federal Lower House seat in May [1, 2, 3]. The traditional conservative Liberal-National coalition saw support slump to a historic low of 17%, showing no benefit from One Nation's decline [1, 2, 3].

A separate poll by the Australian Financial Review showed similar results with Labor narrowly ahead of One Nation [1, 3]. The survey also found Labor leader Anthony Albanese as the preferred choice for prime minister among nearly half of those surveyed, followed by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and Liberal leader Angus Taylor in third place [1, 2, 3].

More than one-third of One Nation supporters said the most important factor for their vote was whether the party understands "people like me," a higher share than other voter groups [1, 2, 3].

Labor's rebound may be helped by passing legislation last week aimed at making housing more affordable for younger Australians [1, 2, 3]. Treasurer Jim Chalmers told television on June 28 that the government recognized the status quo was not working and chose to address growing economic and societal pressures. He said, "We understand in our government that the status quo is not working for people, particularly in the economy, but in our societies more broadly. Change is accelerating in our society and in our economy. These global and generational pressures are intensifying on people, and from our point of view, we’ve chosen to address that to deliver real change rather than to dismiss it or ignore it" [1, 2, 3].

The Liberal-National coalition changed its leader in February but has not regained voter ground since [1, 2, 3]. The next federal election date has not been announced.

The Newspoll results signal a shift in voter sentiment after several months of right-wing One Nation gains, as Labor climbs again ahead of the three main parties.
