Pritam Singh secured re-election as secretary-general of Singapore’s Workers’ Party on June 28, 2026, running unopposed at the biennial party elections [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. The vote followed a special cadres conference held the same day, where Singh faced a no-confidence vote sparked by his 2025 conviction for lying to Parliament [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 7].

About 25 cadres, mostly senior members skeptical of Singh’s leadership, called the special meeting to demand his resignation [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 7]. Despite this pressure, Singh won the secret ballot by a margin of around 80%, with approximately 82 of 106 cadres voting to retain him as leader [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11]. Aljunied GRC MP Gerald Giam noted Singh received “well in excess of a supermajority” from the party’s roughly 100 voting inner circle members [2].

Singh was convicted in 2025 of giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee investigating untrue statements by former Sengkang GRC MP Raeesah Khan in 2021 [1, 8, 9, 10, 11]. The High Court upheld the conviction on appeal in December 2025 [8, 9, 10, 11]. Ahead of the June 28 vote, former Workers’ Party chief Low Thia Khiang publicly reaffirmed his support for Singh, quelling rumors of deeper divisions [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].

The cadres’ meeting was described as robust but civil, with members able to raise concerns and receive responses from Singh [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Singh said the party is “pretty united” after the vote and stressed the need to close ranks to serve Singaporeans responsibly. He added, “I’m quite sure they respect the democratic process, as we all do, and the decision was what the cadres decided it ought to be” [2, 3, 8].

The Workers’ Party has about 120 cadre members eligible to vote, of whom 106 participated in the no-confidence ballot [7, 8, 9, 10, 11]. The 25 dissenting cadres who called for Singh’s resignation mainly consist of older members uneasy with his leadership [7]. Singh’s re-election ensures he will continue as the party’s leader until the next biennial elections.
