Traffic accidents in Singapore involving injuries or deaths rose by 2.7% to 3,929 in the first half of 2026, compared with 3,826 in the same period last year, the Traffic Police said today[2026-08-28] [1, 2, 3, 4]. Total road casualties rose 3.6% to 5,151 from 4,973 during the period. Despite this increase, fatal accidents dropped from 78 to 60 and deaths fell from 79 to 61[all sources].
The decline in fatalities was mainly driven by fewer deaths among motorcyclists and their pillion riders, who remain the largest group involved in fatal crashes. Motorcyclist and pillion deaths fell from 43 to 28 but still accounted for 45.9% of all road deaths in the first half of 2026[all sources]. The Traffic Police said, "Motorcyclist and pillion deaths continued to be the largest group of road users involved in fatal accidents, accounting for 45.9 per cent of all road deaths" [2].
Accidents involving motorcyclists increased to 2,186 from 2,096, with injuries to riders and pillion passengers up to 2,470 from 2,335. Motorcyclists and pillion riders made up 55.6% of all traffic accidents between January and June 2026 [2, 3, 4].
Incidents involving elderly pedestrians also rose, with accidents increasing from 121 to 144 and injuries up almost 25% to 132. Overall, accidents involving elderly pedestrians and motorcyclists grew by 19% and 4.3% respectively in the first half of 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4].
Police warned the traffic situation remains concerning despite fewer fatalities. A spokesperson said, "While fatal accidents and fatalities decreased in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, the longer-term trend remains worrying" [1]. The police pledged to sustain enforcement, education, and engagement efforts aimed at improving road user behavior and safety [1].
Traffic Police statistics show traffic fatalities have been rising since 2020, peaking at a 10-year high of 149 deaths in 2025 [1]. To address motorcycle safety, a "Singapore Ride Safe" campaign targeting motorcyclists will launch on September 12, 2026 [2, 3, 4].
