Nico Hulkenberg retired from the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix after his Audi car suddenly lost power on June 15. The incident occurred when gravel thrown up by Liam Lawson's Racing Bulls car at Turn 12 struck an emergency electrical cutoff switch on Hulkenberg's vehicle, triggering an automatic shutdown of the car's system [1, 2].

Hulkenberg had started the race in the top 10 for the first time this season and was aiming to score points before being forced to retire. He explained, "Liam ran slightly wide ahead of me and put a wheel into the gravel at Turn 12, which kicked up a lot of stones. Some of them hit our car and appear to have triggered the emergency safety switch, causing a complete shutdown of the system. Everything switched off instantly and that was the end of our race" [1].

Audi and Racing director Allan McNish confirmed that the safety fire switch mechanism was activated by the impact of the airborne gravel. He emphasized the shutdown was unrelated to any reliability issues with the car [1, 2].

Meanwhile, Liam Lawson finished eighth in the race, narrowly avoiding incidents despite the gravel disturbance his car created [1, 2].

The unexpected shutdown denied Hulkenberg a chance to capitalize on his strong starting position and added an unusual twist to the Barcelona race on June 15. The team will review procedures around the emergency cutoff switch to prevent similar incidents.
