Jockey Benny Woodworth was suspended for six months for his ride on Flying Nemo in the penultimate Class 4B handicap (1,500m) race held on May 23. The suspension runs from May 25 to November 24, inclusive, according to the Malayan Racing Association (MRA) stewards' ruling [1, 2].
During the May 23 race, Woodworth missed the jump by several lengths and trailed the field of 11 runners. Despite finishing second to Lightning Gal by three-quarters of a length, the ride raised concerns over his effort and tactics [1, 2].
An inquiry conducted by MRA stewards on May 24 found Woodworth guilty of failing to ride to their satisfaction under racing rules. This led to the suspension and a fine of RM20,000 (approximately S$6,400). Woodworth was also advised of his right to appeal the decision [1, 2].
Trainer Richard Lines was also found guilty of misconduct during the inquiry and fined RM10,000. Lines attempted to justify the ride despite its contentious nature but was nevertheless penalized and advised of his appeal rights [1, 2].
Woodworth’s suspension effectively sidelines him from racing for half a year. The racing authorities will continue to monitor the case as any appeal processes unfold.
