Questioning won the Grade 1 Gold Challenge (1,600m) at Hollywoodbets Greyville on June 6, taking the two-million rand (S$155,000) prize by a nose over Legal Counsel [1, 2]. The five-year-old Querari gelding, trained by Vaughan Marshall, secured victory under jockey Richard Fourie [1, 2].
Prior to the Gold Challenge, Questioning had won four consecutive races in the previous four months, including two Grade 2 events, showing a strong run of form leading into the race [1, 2]. Legal Counsel, trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by Tristan Godden, led for much of the race but was caught narrowly at the finish [1, 2]. Gladatorian finished third, followed by The Real Prince [1, 2].
Marshall, who is nearing his 40th Grade 1 win, attributed Questioning’s improvement to maturity but expressed doubts about the horse’s stamina over the mile distance. “I had my doubts over the 1,600m, I must be honest. He came so close (second) in the (Grade 1) King’s Plate (1,600m). He confounded the critics there and he’s done it here. So I’m a little surprised but very, very elated. He’s just matured and turned into a really good horse. He enjoys his work and just looks magnificent. He’s a pleasure to train,” Marshall said [1].
Fourie reflected on the race, saying he pushed Questioning too early in the straight. “I came into the straight and fired him up a little too soon. I know that he’s not an ideal miler and it was a great ride from Tristan, who set nice, good fractions and at one stage, I thought that he was going a bit fast. But he knew what he had underneath him and I drew past him at the 300m a good ½ length, and then it became hard work. I knew the line was coming an,” Fourie explained [1].
The Gold Challenge marked a key success for Questioning and trainer Vaughan Marshall. No other major races are currently scheduled for the horse or connections in the immediate future.
