Waymap-SG, a navigation app designed to provide step-by-step audio guidance for visually impaired public transport users in Singapore, has expanded its coverage to 15 new transport locations as of May 2026, the Land Transport Authority announced [1, 2].
The app was first piloted in 2023 at Tampines Bus Interchange and Tampines MRT station on the Downtown Line, developed in collaboration with SBS Transit [1, 2]. It works indoors and underground without requiring an internet connection, using smartphone sensors such as the accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, and barometer, along with a visual positioning system that may prompt users to take photos to calibrate their location [1, 2].
Users select pre-mapped destinations and receive accessible route instructions that include avoiding stairs and alerts for turns, escalators, lifts, and exits. This helps visually impaired commuters navigate complex transit spaces more safely and independently [1, 2].
The 15 new locations added include major transport hubs such as Yishun Integrated Transport Hub, Marina Bay MRT station, Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, and Outram Park MRT station [1, 2].
Mr. Josh Tseng, who has less than 5 percent vision and runs a media and technology consulting company, described the navigation challenges faced by visually impaired users. He said, "And it gets worse as you age, especially with age-related disabilities," highlighting the ongoing need for accessible travel aids [1].
