Coinbase announced on June 11, 2026, the launch of AI agents capable of executing trades and paying for premium research in the cryptocurrency market using the x402 payment protocol [1, 2, 3]. These agents can operate either integrated with a user’s main Coinbase account or within a separate sandbox environment for testing and experimentation [1, 3].
The agents are designed to trade across crypto spot and derivatives markets, with future plans to support equities and prediction markets as well [1, 2, 3]. They utilize Coinbase Advanced tools, such as TradingView charts, to analyze data and execute trades efficiently [1, 3]. Soon, users will be able to set custom limits for maximum trade size and spending controls to manage risk and budget [1, 3].
The x402 payment protocol, created by Coinbase and partners in May 2025, enables these agents to pay autonomously for digital services like research APIs without requiring login or subscription [1, 2, 3]. Since launching, the protocol has facilitated over 100 million transactions, with about 157,000 agents acting as buyers in the past 30 days alone [2]. Coinbase generates revenue from fees on agent-executed trades and payments settled in USDC stablecoins [2].
Lincoln Murr, Coinbase’s AI product lead, described the goal as creating agents with financial independence that can transact broadly across the internet. Murr said, "Coinbase for Agents is informed by insights gleaned from years of building the agentic economy, and the primary goal is to create agents that can transact. And unlike pure trading platforms, we’re the only one that combines exchange access with a native payments protocol. We’re aiming to build a fundamentally different product for a future where most of the internet is accessed through agents" [1]. He added, "The whole idea is to give agents access to money and, through that financial independence, improve their set of capabilities to pretty much anything on the internet" [2].
The agents can also integrate with external AI systems like ChatGPT or Claude through Coinbase’s MCP server, enabling more sophisticated automated trading and decision making [1, 2, 3].
This launch follows Coinbase’s 2024 introduction of AgentKit, which integrated automated wallets into apps, and the December 2025 rollout of an AI-powered assistant providing trading advice [1, 3]. The new agents mark a step toward establishing autonomous software as primary economic actors online.
Coinbase users interested in experimenting with AI-powered trading agents can now access the feature and apply custom safeguards as more capabilities come online.
