Florida state representative Angie Nixon won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate on August 18, defeating Alexander Vindman with over 56% of the vote to Vindman's roughly 44% [1, 2, 3]. Nixon ran a left-wing, people-centered campaign as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and said, "Look, we can argue all day about people’s labels, but at the end of the day, I care about the needs of people" [1, 4, 5].
Vindman, a retired Army intelligence officer known nationally for testifying against Donald Trump during his first impeachment, was heavily favored and raised approximately $16.3 million, vastly outspending Nixon, whose fundraising totaled between $975,000 and $1 million according to different sources [4, 5]. Despite the fundraising disparity, Vindman conceded and endorsed Nixon after the primary [1]. President Donald Trump celebrated Vindman's loss, calling him a "SleazeBag" who lost to a "Radical Left Lunatic" [5].
Nixon has been an outspoken supporter of Palestinian rights and introduced a resolution calling for de-escalation and a ceasefire in Israel and Palestine [2, 3]. She now faces Republican incumbent Senator Ashley Moody in the November midterm election. Moody was appointed in 2025 to fill the Florida Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio and won the Republican primary with about 79.6% of the vote [2, 3].
Nixon is also scheduled to face trial next month on trespassing and related charges stemming from a protest at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' office in May 2026 [4]. The Senate contest between Nixon and Moody will be a key race as candidates prepare for the November election.
