Google has officially renamed its AI research and note-taking tool NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, aligning its branding with the wider Gemini AI platform and ecosystem [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Originally introduced as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023, the product gained rapid adoption and now counts over 30 million users and more than 600,000 organizations globally [1, 2, 7, 4, 5, 6].

Gemini Notebook remains a standalone AI-powered tool focused on helping users summarize content, cite sources, and analyze data and research materials. It differentiates itself from the Gemini AI chatbot by requiring source documents for generating content rather than producing images or videos from text prompts alone [1, 8, 3, 4, 5, 6].

A key new capability is the introduction of a secure cloud computing environment within each notebook. This allows native code writing and execution for complex data analysis based on user-uploaded sources. The feature is currently available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra and AI Expanded Access. It will roll out to all Google AI Pro users on the web in the coming weeks [1, 2, 8, 3, 4, 5, 6].

Gemini Notebook can generate enriched output formats from the input material including PDFs, charts, slideshows, audio podcasts, video overviews, mind maps, flashcards, infographics, and narrated content. Users can create and access notebooks inside the Gemini app with full cross-app syncing [1, 2, 3, 6].

The product will also be accessible through Google Search AI Mode soon, further integrating it within Google’s AI services [1, 2, 8, 3, 7, 4, 5, 6]. Josh Woodward, Google VP of Labs, Gemini App, and AI Studio, said the rebranded Gemini Notebook "will maintain its independent positioning focused on research, learning, and knowledge organization but will be more deeply tied across various Google AI services" [6].

The rollout of new features and integrations will continue through August, with the goal of expanding access to advanced AI tools for code execution and research across Google AI Pro users worldwide [1, 2, 8, 3, 4, 5, 6].
