Nikita Bier stepped down as head of product at X, Elon Musk's social media platform, on August 5, 2026, after serving a little more than one year in the role [1, 2, 3, 4]. He took over the position in July 2025 and marked his one-year anniversary last month [1, 2, 3, 4].

Bier said he is "pass[ing] the torch and demot[ing] myself to my natural state: a poster," adding, "X is, and will remain, the most important communication technology in history. But running this app is a 24/7 job and it's now time for me to take a breather" [1]. He will remain involved with the company in an advisory capacity [3].

During his tenure, Bier oversaw the launch of about 30 new products. These included substantial rebuilds of X's timeline, Android app, chat system, notifications, and monetization features [1, 2, 4]. Bier was also the public face of several controversial changes such as the "about this account" feature revealing account origins and crackdowns on engagement bait and content ripping [4].

Before joining X, Bier co-founded startups tbh and Gas, both focused on anonymous or compliment messaging apps for teens; tbh was acquired by Facebook (now Meta) and Gas by Discord [2, 4].

Among candidates named to lead product efforts next are Benji Taylor, X's head of design, iOS lead Jonah Katz, and product lead Mridul Singhai [2, 3, 4].
