Cliff Bleszinski, famed lead designer of Gears of War, revealed he struggled with alcoholism for 25 years until a seizure in March 2026 forced him to quit drinking [1, 2, 3]. He said, "The Gears of War trilogy was largely developed hungover by me. I was, at that point, a functioning alcoholic" [1].

Bleszinski's alcoholism began around 2003 during his work on Unreal Tournament. He described reaching a breaking point after years of partying, stating, "Eventually, my body was like 'F**k you,' and I realized this is me hitting a wall and it's time to give this up after 25 years of partying" [1, 2, 3].

He co-founded Boss Key Productions, which released the hero shooter LawBreakers in 2017 and the battle royale Radical Heights in 2018. Both games failed commercially, and Boss Key shut down later that year, deeply affecting Bleszinski's sense of purpose [1, 2, 3]. Reflecting on LawBreakers, he said, "LawBreakers tripped so Concord could faceplant" [3].

Since his seizure in March, Bleszinski has been sober for about four months and is undergoing therapy to aid his recovery [2, 3]. He indicated plans to return to game development but does not intend to create PvP games again. "Good luck to anyone in that [PvP] space. I'm more of a fan of PvE these days. Horde mode saved Gears 2, and I believe that space is evergreen because players just want to hop online with friends and shoot some stuff, no frills, no questions asked," he said [2, 3].

Outside gaming, Bleszinski also co-produced the successful Broadway musical Hadestown, which he called "redemption" [1].

At age 51, Bleszinski is using his sobriety and experience to plan his next steps. His journey through addiction and recovery marks a new chapter following decades in the industry. The coming months will reveal more about his future projects in game development [2, 3].
