Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is planned for release in spring 2027, but its physical edition status remains unsettled as internal talks continue, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi [1, 2]. Hamaguchi said, "We’re still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be for Revelation, so I can’t say anything particularly definitive at this point in time. But I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition" [3].

The first two titles in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy each had true physical editions on disc, but industry trends are shifting toward digital releases. Sony has announced it will end production of new physical PlayStation game discs in 2028, which complicates plans for physical versions [2, 4]. Hamaguchi acknowledged this trend but emphasized his personal commitment to physical editions for their role in fan culture. He said, "I do feel, as a developer and as a fan, that the general trend is for things to shift away from physical towards downloadable games. But that’s obviously talking about the trend. Personally, here at something like Fan Fest or at community events for games that I’ve worked on, I really think that people bringing up things, asking for autographs. I think that’s lovely. I think it’s a wonderful culture and it would be a shame to lose that. I want that to remain" [3].

Even if full discs are phased out, the director expects some form of physical packaging will survive, such as a box containing a code, key cards, or potentially a boot disc. He said, "Maybe you’ll have a box with the code inside it, or maybe key cards like Nintendo’s doing, or a boot disc or something. I feel like there’ll always be something, and I hope there will be" [5].

Technical and regulatory factors such as cartridge storage limits also complicate decisions about physical editions, particularly across different platforms [3].

Sony’s production of physical PlayStation discs will cease starting January 2028, placing a firm deadline on any disc-based releases beyond that time [2, 4]. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled for release roughly one year earlier, in spring 2027, leaving a limited window for any physical edition production [1].
