Sony announced it will close the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PlayStation Vita globally in July 2027, ending new digital purchases on these legacy platforms [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The shutdown will begin earlier for the PS3 store in select markets including Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua starting in August 2026. Sony cited technical limitations as the reason behind the closures. Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, said, "As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required" [2]. Sony said previously purchased games will remain downloadable "for the foreseeable future," but no new digital purchases will be possible after the stores close [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8].
The PS3, launched in November 2006, and the PS Vita, released in December 2011, have both long served as platforms for digital-only games and remain significant to many gamers. Sony acknowledged the emotional impact, stating, "We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming" and calling it "not an easy decision for us to make" [3, 4].
Sony plans to focus its development resources on newer devices like the PlayStation 5. A company announcement said, "As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future" [3].
Additionally, Sony revealed it will end production of physical discs for PlayStation 5 games starting January 2028, marking another shift away from legacy formats [2, 3, 4, 7].
The PS3's PlayStation Store shutdown in August 2026 affects only that platform in select countries, while the PS Vita store will remain open until the final global closure in July 2027. Sony encouraged players to continue enjoying their existing libraries, stating, "We will continue to push the boundaries of play. We look forward to having you on this journey with us as we explore new game worlds and new adventures that have yet to come" [7].
