CD Projekt announced that The Witcher 4 will launch in 2028 on PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X with a physical boxed edition planned despite uncertainties around disc availability for PS5 users [1, 2]. Sony intends to stop manufacturing PlayStation 5 game discs by January 2028, just before the game's release [1, 2, 3].
The developer’s joint CEO Michał Nowakowski highlighted their commitment to physical collectibles, calling them "feelies" that fans will want to open and enjoy. He said, "We’re big fans of people having access to tangible collectible things. We’re nerds ourselves, and we like that. We always supported that. So, whatever is the case, we’re going to be for sure having a box [1]."
However, Nowakowski acknowledged that CD Projekt has no influence over Sony's disc manufacturing policies. He explained, "We know what PlayStation has announced. And we have no influence on the policies of the first parties. The discs for the first parties, including PlayStation, have to be manufactured in their own factories. So, if they stop manufacturing indeed by 2028, then yes [we won’t have a disc] [2, 3]."
It remains unclear if The Witcher 4’s physical edition on PS5 will include a disc or only other physical items. For Xbox Series X and Windows PC, traditional disc media and boxed versions are expected to be unaffected.
Ahead of The Witcher 4, CD Projekt will release The Witcher 3 remaster on September 29, 2026, followed by the Songs of the Past expansion in 2027, which serves as prequel content [1, 2].
Sony’s official halt of PS5 disc production is set for January 2028, shortly before The Witcher 4’s launch window that same year [1, 2, 3].
