Idris Elba stated that it was never realistic for him to be cast as James Bond because global audiences would not accept a Black male, African male playing the role. "James Bond was written how he was written for a reason," Elba said, adding, "some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period" [1, 2].

Elba described James Bond as escapism and said the character should remain "pure to what it is" without trying to be "woke" or reflect "the world’s taste." He said, "Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let's not try and make it woke. I think you've got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don't try and answer the world's taste. Just be Bond" [1, 2].

He also mentioned in 2016 that he felt he was too old to play Bond and has distanced himself from the speculation since then [1]. At age 53, Elba rejected being cast as Bond again, saying, "a lot of people talk about another character that begins with ‘J’ and ends with ‘B,’ but I’m not going to be that guy. I’m going to be John Luther. That’s who I am" [2].

Elba was met with backlash for his remarks and responded on social media emphasizing his identity as a Black man, but rejecting the idea of defining his profession solely by race. He stated, "There isn't a soul on this earth that can question whether I consider myself a BLACK MAN or not. Being an 'actor' is a profession, like being an 'architect,' they are not defined by race" [2].

Currently, auditions are underway to cast the next James Bond for a reboot produced by Amazon MGM Studios, with Denis Villeneuve set to direct the upcoming film [1, 2]. Daniel Craig previously portrayed Bond until 2021, when his character died in the film No Time to Die [1, 2].

Helen Mirren, who played M in the Bond films, has said the role "has to be a guy," arguing a female Bond "just doesn't work" [1]. A leaked internal memo reportedly suggests Amazon aims to keep the character male and British or from the Commonwealth in the reboot [1].

Amazon announced on May 14, 2026, that the search for the next actor to play James Bond is underway, confirming Denis Villeneuve as director [2].
