Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank has increased sharply in recent years, causing widespread casualties, property damage, and displacement. Between 2023 and 2025, at least 1,244 Palestinians, including 268 children, were killed—exceeding the total killed from 2006 to 2022, which was 1,036 including 225 children [1]. Since October 2023 alone, Israeli forces have killed over 1,169 Palestinians, injured more than 12,600, and detained about 23,000 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem [2].
The year 2026 has seen no slowdown. Over 540 settler attacks occurred in the first quarter, leading to 33 Palestinian deaths and displacing more than 2,200 people [1]. By June, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric noted the rate of settler violence had surpassed 1,000 attacks with an average of six incidents per day—higher than any previous year on record [2]. Bushra Khalidi from Oxfam International described the situation as "tragic and horrifying," warning the West Bank has faced escalating violence even as global attention focused on Gaza [1].
Military operations, settler violence, demolitions, and movement restrictions forced nearly 46,000 Palestinians to flee their homes between 2023 and 2025. In 2026 alone, over 2,200 Palestinians were displaced by these factors, with hundreds more affected by home demolitions ordered by Israeli authorities [2, 1]. Movement obstacles for Palestinians have also grown, with 925 barriers now hindering travel across the West Bank including East Jerusalem [1].
The population of Israeli settlers also continues to grow, numbering roughly 500,000 in illegal settlements throughout the West Bank and another 250,000 in settlements in occupied East Jerusalem [2, 1]. These settlements and restrictions contribute to rising tensions and violence.
In July 2025, the International Court of Justice issued a ruling declaring Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories illegal [2]. Since the outbreak of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023, Israeli military measures including home demolitions and settlement expansion have intensified in the West Bank, escalating violence and displacement [2, 1].
The violence and displacement show no signs of abating. More attacks, casualties, and forced displacements are expected as conditions remain tense throughout 2026.
