One person has died and 207 others have fallen ill in a salmonella outbreak across the UK linked to eggs imported from outside the country, authorities announced on August 18, 2026 [1, 2, 3].
The outbreak involves a single confirmed strain of salmonella identified through whole genome sequencing. Cases range in age from under one year to 90 years old [1, 2, 3]. Most cases have been reported in England (199), with smaller numbers in Scotland (6), Wales (1), and Northern Ireland (1). London accounted for 47 cases while Yorkshire and the Humber reported 38 [1, 2, 3].
Some patients became seriously ill, requiring hospital treatment; about 38% were hospitalized and two developed bloodstream infections [1, 2, 3]. Symptoms of the infection include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever, with risk of serious complications for young children, elderly, or immune-compromised individuals [2].
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is working with the Food Standards Agency and other public health bodies to investigate the outbreak. Hannah Charles, lead epidemiologist at UKHSA, said, "We’re working with Food Standards Agency and other public health agencies to investigate a salmonella outbreak that may be linked to eggs imported from outside of the UK" [1, 3].
Evidence points to eggs imported from abroad as the likely source; no link has been found to UK-produced eggs or poultry. Interviews with 114 affected individuals identified five food businesses linked to 24 cases, all supplied by eggs from multiple sources including importers [1]. The outbreak is genetically linked to a salmonella event in 2025 also connected with imported eggs [2].
Authorities advised the public to follow basic food safety precautions to reduce risk. "There are simple steps to prevent the spread of salmonella: wash your hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and before preparing and handling food, cook food thoroughly, and if you have any symptoms, avoid handling food for others where possible," Charles said [2].
The first case in this outbreak was identified on August 11, 2025. An increase in cases detected in May 2026 triggered the current investigation. The most recent confirmed case occurred on August 1, 2026. UKHSA formally announced the outbreak details on August 18, 2026 [1, 3].
