Russia carried out a large-scale missile and drone strike on Kyiv and surrounding areas on the night of August 4-5, 2026, killing at least 17 people and injuring over 40, Ukrainian officials said [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
The assault included 24 ballistic missiles, four Zircon cruise missiles, and 115 drones launched against the capital and nearby locations [2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted about 90% of the drones but missed all the ballistic and cruise missiles [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
The attackers targeted warehouse facilities, logistics hubs, retail warehouses, and some civilian infrastructure including a railway station, a brewing company, and construction materials warehouses near Kyiv [1, 2, 4, 5, 6]. Major warehouses in Brovary and Bucha were destroyed or set on fire [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, “A warehouse near the city center was destroyed, rescuers found two people under the rubble” [1]. Rescue operations and firefighting continued into August 6, including responding to an ammonia leak emergency [1, 2, 5].
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the lack of ballistic missile interceptors was causing avoidable casualties and called for urgent delivery of Patriot missile systems. He said, “Ballistic missile interceptors could have saved the lives of those killed today. It is very important that our partners understand that delays in supplying them, or an unwillingness to provide anti-ballistic systems, lead directly to such horrific casualties and destruction” [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Zelenskyy, said the enemy was attacking all types of storage and logistics facilities in a war of attrition [2]. Russia’s Defense Ministry said the strikes targeted military logistics and supply sites supporting Ukrainian forces [1].
At the same time, Ukraine continued attacks on Russian territory, including striking a Wildberries logistics center in Russia on August 5 [1, 7].
The Kyiv military administration reported the air raid started shortly after midnight and lasted over an hour with multiple locations hit across the city [1, 5, 6]. On August 6, Russian strikes also killed at least three people in eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv and injured 13 in Sumy in guided bomb attacks [7, 8].
