Two Palestinian teenagers, Omar al-Nassan (19) and Khalil Abu Alia (16), were killed on September 2 in al-Mughayyir, a village in the occupied West Bank, during an attack involving Israeli settlers and soldiers [1, 2]. The youths were shot amid clashes that erupted after Israeli settlers, escorted by police and military forces, entered the village to seize sheep. Palestinians responded by throwing stones, triggering the violence [1, 2].

Khalil Abu Alia was shot in the neck by a soldier while standing on his home doorstep. Omar al-Nassan was shot twice, including once in the back; he died before reaching the hospital. It remains unclear whether a soldier or settler fired the shots that killed Omar al-Nassan [2].

The Israeli military said its troops fired on what they described as "key instigators" during a violent disturbance but did not provide evidence of sheep theft or announce any investigation [1, 2].

Al-Mughayyir, near Ramallah, has faced repeated attacks from settlers and military raids amid a surge in violence across the West Bank this year. According to UN data, at least 81 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers so far in 2026, including 23 in settler attacks [1]. Meanwhile, three Israelis—including security personnel and civilians—have been killed by Palestinians in the West Bank during the same period [1].

On the same day as the killings, Israeli forces demolished the Palestinian village of Khirbet al-Tabban in the Masafer Yatta area [1]. Three days later, on September 5, Israeli troops raided al-Mughayyir again, detaining several Palestinian youths and forcing them to reopen a blocked secondary road west of the village. Settlers also stole water tanks in the northern Jordan Valley that day, according to local sources [3].

Al-Mughayyir's boys' school has about 470 students. Waheed Abu Naim, an English teacher of the two victims, said, "We don’t know how long these crimes are going to continue. This week we are making extra security preparations for the new semester which starts in three days" [2].

Approximately 700,000 Israeli settlers live in some 160 settlements across the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where about 3.3 million Palestinians also reside [1].

Israeli forces and settlers continue to maintain a strong presence in the area amid ongoing tensions. The next school semester in al-Mughayyir will start on September 8, following recent security preparations by the community [2].
