Coco Gauff was involved in a minor car accident on June 6 while traveling to the French Open for her first-round match at Roland Garros. The car collided with a pole, causing a noticeable impact and spilling Gauff's juice inside the vehicle. "We got in a mini car accident on my way to the site today. We ran into a [pole]. You felt a little impact. I spilled my juice all over the car," Gauff said. The car was not drivable afterward, forcing Gauff to take a taxi to the venue. She reported no injuries from the accident [1, 2].
Despite the eventful start to her day, Gauff went on to win her opening round match against Taylor Townsend in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. The match began earlier than expected due to a retirement in another match on Court Philippe-Chatrier [1, 2].
Just before stepping onto the court, Gauff said her dress got stuck and her physio helped her in a bathroom. "It was an eventful day," she said. "But I feel like whenever that happens, it lets you not think about the match too much. I'm just happy to be here in one piece." [2]
Gauff entered the tournament as the 2025 French Open champion, having defeated Aryna Sabalenka in last year’s final [1, 2].
