Australian swimmer Lani Pallister defeated American Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, marking Ledecky's first defeat in this event at a major international meet [1, 2, 3]. Pallister led from start to finish and won with a time of 8:06.10, while Ledecky finished second at 8:07.26 [1, 2, 3].

Ledecky had dominated the 800m freestyle since winning Olympic gold in 2012 as a 15-year-old, accumulating 13 international gold medals in the event, including four Olympic golds and seven world titles [1, 2, 3]. Canadian Summer McIntosh was the only swimmer to beat Ledecky previously in the 800m freestyle, accomplishing this once at a minor domestic meet in Florida in February 2024 [1, 2, 3].

At the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, Ledecky narrowly out-touched Pallister and McIntosh in the 800m freestyle, maintaining her unbeaten run at major international meets until now [1, 2, 3].

Earlier in the same week at the Pan Pacific Championships, Pallister earned her first career victory over Ledecky in the 400m freestyle and finished second behind her in the 1500m freestyle [1, 2, 3]. Pallister won gold medals in the 200m, 400m, and 800m freestyle events, as well as the women's 4x200m freestyle relay [2, 3].

After winning the 800m freestyle, Pallister celebrated by punching the water and shared a hug with Ledecky across the lane rope [1, 2, 3]. Pallister credited Ledecky for raising the profile of women's distance swimming, saying, "Katie is such a dominant force and I think it’s really important we give her a big round of a hand. Without her, we wouldn’t have women’s distance swimming in the place we’re at at the moment. To be part of that story at the moment [it’s] pretty much all because we get to chase Katie" [1].

On the final day of the Pan Pacifics, American Kate Douglass set a new world record twice in the women's 50m freestyle, winning gold with a time of 23.19 seconds. This improved on her own earlier record of 23.49 seconds set the same day and broke the previous mark of 23.55 seconds held by Gretchen Walsh [2, 3]. Douglass also earned silver in the women's 200m breaststroke and gold in the medley relay at the meet [2].
