Mathieu van der Poel claimed victory in the ninth stage of the 2026 Tour de France on July 12, winning a sprint finish from a small breakaway group [1, 2, 3]. The route from Malemort to Ussel included almost 2,700 meters of altitude gain over the final 80 kilometers, featuring three steep climbs despite the heat [2]. Tobias Johannessen finished second behind van der Poel, with Tom Pidcock coming in third [1, 2, 3].

Pidcock suffered a mechanical problem roughly 25 kilometers from the finish when his bike's gear shifter stopped working, hampering his ability to challenge van der Poel in the sprint. "My shifter stopped working. I couldn't change gear," Pidcock said. "Mathieu is a difficult one to beat in a sprint situation like that. It would be difficult anyway, so I'm happy for a good day's racing." He added he had been feeling stronger than before but was forced out the back of the group on the last climb due to the issue [1, 2].

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar finished six seconds behind van der Poel in the chasing peloton, maintaining his overall lead and yellow jersey with a margin of 2 minutes 42 seconds over second place [1, 3]. Pogacar called for a major update to the pro cycling calendar to avoid racing in extreme summer heat, saying, "If I had the power I would change all the calendar and not race in July and August in hot places... Maybe the next step is to start the stages earlier" [2].

Van der Poel, who has three Tour de France stage wins and three each at Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, said the win was a boost after a tough start for his team: "We stayed calm... It's really nice to go to the first rest day with a win" [1, 3].

Fans were also advised against attending the final 40 kilometers of an earlier stage due to nearby wildfires along the Spanish-French border, marking another weather disruption this year [1].
