XLibre Project launched the stable version 25.2.0 of its XServer on June 21, 2026, delivering key architectural changes and expanded Nvidia driver support [1].
The release includes a major refactoring of the glamor_egl architecture, which decouples DRI3 from the Generic Buffer Manager (gbm) and introduces a dumb gbm backend. These changes aim to streamline graphics processing paths and improve flexibility [1].
Support for proprietary Nvidia drivers version 470 and higher was added for EGL initialization, GL context creation, GLX, and DRI3. This update provides faster and simpler paths for utilizing Nvidia GPUs along with more reliable driver detection [1]. Nvidia drivers version 390 and higher now also support X-Video through glamor on the Xfbdev server variant.
The kdrive subsystem received extensive improvements, gaining multi-screen support, enhanced DRI3 and glamor integration, X-Video support through glamor, evdev input autodetection, virtual terminal (VT) switching, and threaded input handling. These upgrades improve usability and performance on lightweight or embedded systems [1].
The fbdev variant now supports RandR modesetting with split framebuffer functionality, broadening configuration options. Meanwhile, the ephyr variant added a dummy refresh rate feature via RandR to improve compatibility with Proton 8 and later versions [1].
Additionally, the virtual framebuffer X server gained support for DRI3 and GLX through glamor, aligning it with modern rendering capabilities [1]. Command-line argument options were also expanded on the Xfbdev server.
Since the previous 25.1.0 release, this version incorporates approximately 976 commits addressing bugs and feature enhancements across multiple XServer subsystems [1].
